WPM vs Accuracy — Which Matters More?
Every typing test measures two things: words per minute (WPM) and accuracy percentage. But which one should you focus on improving first? The answer might surprise you.
The Short Answer: Accuracy First
Accuracy always comes first. A developer who types 60 WPM at 98% accuracy is more productive than one who types 90 WPM at 85% accuracy. Here's the math: at 85% accuracy on 90 WPM, you're making roughly 13-14 errors per minute. That's constant interruption to fix mistakes.
What is a Good Accuracy Score?
- Below 90% — Needs significant work. Too many errors slow everything down.
- 90-95% — Acceptable but room for improvement.
- 95-98% — Good. You're accurate and productive.
- 98-100% — Excellent. Focus on increasing speed now.
What is a Good WPM?
- Below 40 WPM — Slowing you down significantly. Priority to improve.
- 40-60 WPM — Average. Functional for most tasks.
- 60-80 WPM — Above average. You're efficient.
- 80+ WPM — Fast. Typing is no longer your bottleneck.
The Real Goal: Effective WPM
Effective WPM (sometimes called AWPM — Adjusted WPM) accounts for errors. A 90 WPM typist at 85% accuracy has an effective WPM of about 76. A 65 WPM typist at 98% accuracy has an effective WPM of about 63. The gap is much smaller than the raw numbers suggest.
How TypeBLX Helps You Balance Both
TypeBLX tracks both metrics simultaneously during every session. The live accuracy percentage shows you in real time whether you're sacrificing accuracy for speed. If your accuracy drops below 95%, that's your signal to slow down slightly.
The Training Strategy
Start every practice session at a comfortable speed with high accuracy. Gradually push speed only when you can maintain 95%+ accuracy. This builds the right habits and prevents reinforcing sloppy typing patterns.
